The following list of resources/websites were super helpful with planning our move back to Canada from the United States. We hope you’ll find them useful as well!

UNITED STATES
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services – US government’s official USCIS homepage
I-407, Record of Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status – USCIS form I-407 to return your green cards once you’ve moved away
Simplified Trade Solutions – US Vehicle Export Requirements; all vehicles leaving the United States must first be exported. These guys were quick and super easy to deal with.
CDC Dog Import Form – effective August 1, 2024, if you’re travelling back into the United States with a dog, you’ll need to complete this form (one per dog)
CANADA
Canada Border Security Agency (CBSA) – As a federal government agency, these guys make and enforce the cross-border rules, and are responsible for the safe and lawful movement of both travellers and goods into Canada.

BSF186 Form – CBSA Personal Effects Accounting Document; don’t arrive at the Canada/US border without it, you’ll need it to cross the border!
Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) – a Transport Canada program, all vehicles leaving the United States and entering Canada permanently must register with RIV
CBSA – Guide for residents returning to Canada – everything you need to know about what you can and can’t bring back
Government of Canada – bringing food into Canada for personal use – what you can and can’t bring back, food wise
Government of Canada – bringing animals to Canada – guidelines for importing and travelling with pets
Telus Communications – home internet, security, TV, cell service, etc.
Rogers/Shaw – home internet, security, TV, cell service, etc.
GENERAL
Canada/US Border Crossings – a comprehensive list of all the Canada/US border crossings by province and state (if you’re bringing a vehicle across you’ll need to know where you’re crossing and when)
U-Haul – the only ‘do-it-yourself’ mover where we could drive the truck one way between Canada and the US; all the others we checked (i.e.: Penske, POD were moves within the US only)
BC Pet Registry – register your pet’s microchip with the BC Pet Registry. All microchips registered with them are traceable internationally via the American Animal Hospital Association’s universal pet microchip program.
British Columbia’s MSP – BC’s Medical Services Plan for BC residents
British Columbia’s Fair Pharmacare – help for BC families to pay for prescription drugs, dispensing fees and some medical devices and supplies
